Porcelain/ceramic and glass insulators exhibit satisfactory mechanical, surface and ultraviolet resistance properties. However, surface wettability, brittleness and heavy weight are the primary drawbacks of glass and ceramic insulants for high voltage (HV) dielectric applications.

In addition, hydrophobicity and their recovery from temporary-loss is the most significant feature of HTV Insulator grade materials.
